Update 2016

It's been a very long time since my last post which was not a positive one.  I think it's been a couple of years!  I still get hits on my blog and I thought it was time to delete my last post.  As people stumble upon this blog I figured I might as well have it end on a good note.  I logged in the other day to delete the very last post from a couple of years ago and somehow it triggered a publishing of an old post.  I can't figure out how it happened.

I am well and blessed!  The harrowing ordeal we have been through is finally over and everything is stabilized.  The bad news is that I'm so busy that there is absolutely no time for blogging - that may change in time.  If I do return to blogging it will no longer be for Live Beautifully.  I have covered every topic I have wanted to and really would love to delve into another arena.  If that happens at all in the future, I will send another update. Who knows, maybe some of you may very well follow along, maybe some of you are as passionate as I am about Interior Design.  How good are those chances?  Regardless, If that happens, I will let you know!  I can still be contacted through this blog.

Many blessings!

The Benefits of Intermittent Fasting

Updates

Where do vegetarians get their protein?    Have you ever heard of a condition brought on by protein deficiency? I haven't, but it seems that so many people believe that it actually must exist.  You would also think that it is the most indispensable nutrient  Forget how excess animal protein can lead to premature aging, constipation, osteoporosis, cancer, heart disease- the list goes on.  I saw this clip by Dr. Michael Greger and thought it was so good that I wanted to share it with you.  In addition to sharing studies that indicate the true markers for protein intake, he also states what nutrient Americans truly are deficient in.  Watch the video which is less than five minutes here.

The Healing Effect-  I recently saw a trailer to a film that looks good.  It features a few physicians, natural healers and authors that I follow.  The police officer is from my old stomping grounds -Lowell, MA.   I can spot a Boston accent like nobody's business and this cop most certainly has one.  Check out the trailer to this film here.

I have mentioned the need to become familiar with natural sources of antibiotics.  I saw this list of natural antibiotics and thought I have to pass this along to my readers.  Excellent article!

The Benefits of Intermittent Fasting

Growing up as an Adventist I did not appreciate the amazing wisdom in the the heatlh information we have received as a denomination.  I heard many talk about it with derision and so I really didn't give it much attention.  As an adult, and after I noticed the amazing power of plant foods,  I began to pay closer attention.  Now, I can't even begin to tell you how much I love the message of health. One of the tidbits of wisdom is how and when we should eat.  The statement goes,"Breakfast like a king, Lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper."  Dinner is also the ideal time to skip a meal.  What happens when we choose this way of eating which is so contrary to the way Americans eat?

Weight control

Would you like to loose weight more easily?  Skip dinner or have something light to eat like fruit.  I eat two meals a day, breakfast at 11a.m. and I try to have my second meal at 4pm.  If I do this, I find that I loose weight very easily.  One of the reasons why I love this way of eating is because I can eat a large meal and feel very satisfied.  I don't get hungry on this method, but if you find you must have something, try fresh juice made from fruits and vegetables in a juicer.  As for timing meals, everyone is different.  You would have to find out what works best for you.  I tried Tonya Zavasta's method called "quantum eating", I was shaking and weak on her method.

Longevity

The longest lived people in the world eat two meals a day.  Think about how much energy the body has to put out for digestion with all the food many people stuff in their mouths - They dig their graves with their teeth!  This is an interesting article that mentions studies on animals and how their lives are extended by calorie restriction.

In the morning after a night of rest, the body's energy for digestion is at it's peak which is why a large meal is most appropriate at this time.  Concurrently, it's energy is spent at the end of the day, which is why it is best to not tax it later in the day.  The less you tax your body, the longer you live.

Detoxification

We live in a cesspool of toxins.  If we were to remove toxicity by changing household cleaners and body care products, we still wouldn't be able to deal with all of the toxicity in our environment.  Being mindful of detoxification becomes paramount for healthful living.  Eating foods that escort toxins out of our bodies is important.  Another way to deal with toxicity and boosting the immune system is by fasting.  When the digestive system is shut down, it switches to detox mode.  Intermittent fasting by skipping the last meal of the day is a way to fast on a daily basis and help your body detoxify on a regular basis.

I eat this way from Monday to Friday.  I relax this method on the weekend when I am more likely to be invited to a friend's house for a meal.  If you are interestested in trying this method, ease into and see how your body responds.  I found an excellent article by Dr. Mercola on the benefits of intermittent fasting here.  For those who think they will turn into a skinny rail, check out this site which promotes it for men who are body building.  Be sure to scroll down to see the photos of Surge Nubret next to Arnold Schwarzenegger.  Pretty amazing! I don't agree with everything stated in article but most of it seems pretty sound.

Have a great day!

Super grain: Quinoa

Quinoa Garden Salad

Update

I have been critical of Dr. Oz for changing his point of view in the past.  I was very disappointed in fact over a couple of issues.  This time, however, I agree with him completely over the use of medical marijuana.  I do not support the use of it as a recreational drug but see it as a powerful herb that can help many people especially with cancer and epilepsy.  Here is a recent clip with Dr. Oz and his comments about this herb.

Super Grain Quinoa

I recently had friends over for lunch and I forgot to pick up dessert.  I sent my husband to pick some up for me.  After our meal, I set out the dessert which included chocolate chip cookies.  There are certain things that trigger weakness in me.  Chocolate being one of them and the second being cookies.  Chocolate chip cookies?  Double whammy!  I usually feel a sense of accomplishment over mastering the art of self control.  I love the discipline of eating healthfully.  I love passing by sugar and junk most others indulge in.  There are times however when I miserably succumb to the temptations around me.  My husband had tossed the packaging to the cookies and the trash was taken out, so we weren't sure if the cookies were gluten free or not.  My wishful thinking took over, my inner "cookie monster" was awakened and the rest is history.  I tasted one and thought, "these are powdery, crumbly cookies.  They must be gluten-free".  So I began downing them one by one.  Self-control?  Out the window!  I had my fill and I so enjoyed it!  Beyond shameful!

The next day I began to feel a sharp pain in my shoulder and it steadily increased until my arm was useless by my side.  Sure enough, the cookies weren't gluten free.  It has been a rude awakening for me going gluten free.  Gluten has become poison to my body.  I never knew how much I craved gluten foods until I had to give it up for the sake of health.  I have had to continually remind myself of how blessed I am.  I can live with zero symptoms of arthritis by simply removing gluten from my diet and eating mostly alkaline foods- no drugs, no pain and full mobility- I can't ask for more.  I am also exploring baking with gluten free flours- not terrible.

In the past year or so, because of my new sensitivity to gluten, I have become acquainted with some grains that really are healthful.  I eat them on a regular basis and would like to share them with you.  I have mentioned that I make an effort to maintain an alkaline diet which is mostly raw, but I do include cooked foods.  In this post, I would like to discuss super grain quinoa.  I was first introduced to quinoa by my sister's in-laws who are from Peru.  My mom began cooking with it and now, only after the scourge of psoriatic arthritis has made itself very present, I have started using it.
I purchase my quinoa at Costco

The Benefits of Quinoa

Quinoa has been consumed for thousands of years by those who live in and around the Andes of South America.  It has been cultivated at high elevations and benefited those who lived in such a climate.  The Incas revered this grain so much, that they considered the grain as sacred.  It is rich in protein and actually has all 9 essential amino acids.  People fret about eating complete protein on a vegetarian diet.  I believe that the body stores and assembles complete protein as needed.  For those who insist on getting it all in one meal, consider adding quinoa.  Nothing but complete protein with this grain!  Quinoa is also rich in Iron, B vitamins such as B1, B2,B3, B6 and B9.  Quinoa has a high fiber content making it more filling and satisfying.  As for minerals, quinoa contains magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, zinc, copper, selenium and manganese.  This super grain has been shown to help those consuming it to stave off chances of developing diabetes and cholesterol.  It is excellent in helping one achieve optimal weight provided that the rest of one's diet and lifestyle is also healthful.

Cooking with quinoa

If you know how to cook rice, you know how to cook quinoa.  I take a cup quinoa and two cups water, season it and bring it to a boil.  Once boiling, I reduce heat to low and bring the mixture to a simmer.  I let it cook until all the water is consumed.  This may take 15 to 20 minutes.  Another method is to just toss it into a pot of chili, stew or soup.  I eat quinoa most frequently for breakfast.  I like to season it with cinnamon, nutmeg a dash of salt and coconut palm sugar (to taste).  Once cooked I'll pour coconut milk over it and eat it as a hot cereal.  Below is a recipe for Quinoa Garden Salad.  Hope you enjoy it!

Quinoa Garden Salad

2 cups water
1 cup quinoa
2 to 3 bell peppers (red, orange and yellow)
2 cucumbers
1 bunch chopped green onions
1- 14 1/2  can chickpeas, drained and rinsed
1/2 cup chopped fresh parsley
1/4 cup chopped fresh mint
1/2 cup fresh lemon juice
1 tbsp soy sauce
Tabasco sauce- a dash
freshly ground black pepper

(as a side note, I always adjust ingredients until it tastes right to me).

Place the quinoa and water in a pot and bring this to a boil.  Once boiling, reduce heat to simmer, cover with a lid and allow to cook until the water is consumed. This should take about 15 to 20 minutes.  Set aside and allow to cool.  Chop bell peppers, cucumbers, green onions, parsley, mint  - place into a bowl with chick peas.  Mix lemon juice, soy sauce, tabasco, salt a pepper.  Mix quinoa, chopped salad ingredients and dressing.  Adjust seasonings.

Have a great day!

The Food Revolution Summit

There are certain individuals who dared to think outside the box and question the status quo.  I consider them visionary pioneers who weren't afraid of being marginalized.  In their quest for answers that perplexed them, they found healing and have helped thousands of those around them to also find the path to health-even after their passing.  I consider Ann Wigmore, John Christopher and more recently, John Robbins to be among them.  John Robbins, heir to the Baskin Robbins fortune, chose to forego his inheritance to invest his energy in something far more valuable- opening the eyes of the general public to the horrendous way food is produced in the United States.  He continues with this effort with the help of his son, Ocean.  The Food Revolution Summit begins Saturday April 26th to May 4.  They have several well informed speakers and even some celebrities like Woody Harrelson and Alicia Silverstone who will participate in this summit.  Click here to register for this free online event.

Sourcing The Highest Quality Vitamin D

I absolutely love spring!  Something about fresh chartreuse green, young bulbs poking out of the ground and the busy chatter of the birds that sends my head spinning.  As a daydreaming little girl, I would get myself into trouble in school when I couldn't stay focused on the lesson because I was so enraptured with the budding trees.  Trees of all things!  It's my favorite season again and time to get back outside.  My family and I spent a lot of time in the sun this past weekend.  After such a brutal winter, we were eager to peal off layers and expose our skin to the sun.   We joined friends and headed toward the Tidal Basin to see the cherry blossoms in D.C.  My friend Don is just as obsessed as I am about living healthfully.  Of course, our conversation naturally gravitated to the topic of the sun and vitamin D.

Did you know that one of the reasons people do not get sick as frequently during the summer is because of increased sun exposure?  Vitamin D boosts immunity and is a must for anyone who is fighting cancer or any other sickness where the immune system is compromised.  The sun is also excellent for treating depression and sleep disorders.  I am a very light sleeper, believe me -it can be miserable!  However, I can sleep like a log after several hours of being outdoors.

You can imagine why I go stir crazy when I see so many articles about increased risk of cancer from the sun.  Burning plus a body that is sick from poor lifestyle habits equals a risk for skin cancer.  However, if you change the variables of the equation, you can completely change the outcome.  Sun exposure at appropriate times and duration on a body that is  saturated with phytonutrients, will boost immunity and help to increase health in the individual.  Supplementation is necessary during the winter months but nothing beats the quality of Vitamin D that is only obtainable  by sun exposure.  Vitamin D from sun exposure is water soluble which makes it much more usable by the body than vitamin D which comes from other sources.  I wanted to share an excellent article with you from Dr. Mercola.  Here is one of my posts on sun exposure where I take the time to explain how to obtain appropriate sun exposure.

I just got word that the temperature is supposed to drop tonight below freezing.  Old man winter just won't let up!

Better Kitchen Tools and Appliances

Here's where I spend a lot of my time!- My Kitchen

I was going to begin by offering excuses for my lapse in posting.  I really can't keep up like I used to.  I have resigned to the idea that it's okay.  I will post when I can.  When the demands of life shift, I have to adapt as well.  So without any further explanation, onto my post!

Update

The Raw Living Summit is taking place online right now.  Click here to tune in.

Better Kitchen Tools and Appliances

I believe in making every effort to promote a healthful lifestyle by what food I provide for my family and how I prepare it.  There are certain appliances and tools I will steer clear of.  I would like to explain why.

Microwaves

I have a microwave in my kitchen and use it periodically- but not for any of the food I or my family eat.  I had it installed for the resale value of my house.  The first reason why I limit use of my microwave is because of the electro-magnetic radiation that it emits.  Manufacturers can always make claims as to the safety of their products, I usually do not take their claims into consideration.  The second reason is because whenever anything gets nuked, all nutrition is lost.  Consider a fruit or vegetable and how it is grown this day and age.  It is first treated with pesticides, chemicals and many times genetically modified.  Consider the time in transit when being shipped to the grocery store.  Then we would add the time we store it before we eat it.  You can begin to understand how nutrition steadily declines.  If we are trying to nourish our bodies, why microwave and zap the last bit of nutrition out of our food?  I have heard of people microwaving baby formula (I just cringe at the thought!)  Microwaving will actually change the molecular structure of our food.  I heard of a story of someone who had saved blood in a blood bank before surgery.  The blood was warmed in a microwave before it was given back to the patient.  The patient died as a result.  Here is an excellent article which addresses these topics in much greater detail.

I purchased a double oven which is very handy.  The top oven is smaller and is what I use to reheat food.  It takes all of five minutes to reheat a plate of food in this section of my oven.  A counter top convection oven would also be a good alternative to the microwave oven.

Non-Stick Teflon

I avoid using Teflon because of the harmful gases they emit when heated to high temperatures.  Manufacturers will always claim that their products are safe to use, however  studies show that the gases emitted will cause harm.  Small birds die when they inhale the gases and there is such a thing as Teflon flu in humans.  There is also the concern of how the chemical Perfluoro-octanioic Acid or PFOA can be found in human blood samples, not to mention how it has polluted our water supply.  Here is an article worth reading in regards to this topic.

A better alternative is to use PFOA- free ceramic pans.  When they first became available for sale, they were very expensive.  I have noticed that they are more widely available and reasonably priced.

Plastic Cutting Boards

I once believed that plastic cutting boards were superior to wood boards.  I figured since plastic has a hard non-porous surface, it would become thoroughly cleaned when run through a dish washer.  I have been corrected on this topic.  Plastic becomes scored when used frequently which creates endless striations and fibers which are practically impossible to clean completely.  Wood on the other hand, has properties that kill bacteria over time.  It's completely amazing!  Read this article which covers the studies that have been done on this topic.  I am a firm believer that you can't improve upon what has already been done in nature. The more I read, the more I'm blown away by the amazing attributes found in natural things all around us.

Have a great day!

Two Restaurants

Update

Dinner with Dr Neil Barnard, MD

I wanted to bring to your attention a dinner hosted by Great Sage restaurant in Clarksville, MD.  Dr. Neil Barnard, the founding president of PCRM (Physician's Committee Of Responsible Medicine) will be the guest speaker at this event.  This dinner will take place Monday, March 10 at 7 pm.   The cost of the meal will be 100 dollars per person with a portion of this amount donated to PCRM.  For more information, go here.

Two Restaurants

I love finding good restaurants.  To be more specific, I like finding restaurants that cater to my dietary needs.  When I do find one, well, I just have to share!  My family and I went out to eat recently and of all places we went to find a healthful meal, we ended up at Silver Diner in Laurel, MD.  Diners in general are synonymous with greasy spoons to me and selections that are vegan friendly seem to always be few and far between.  But the same cannot be said about Silver Diner!  I was so pleasantly surprised!  I had a gluten free, vegan meal and my family also found options to their liking.  My kids even had incredibly delicious vegan milk shakes!  Kudos to Silver Diner for having a broad inclusive selection!  Check out their site here.

We enjoy heading down to the parks in Orlando from time to time and whenever we do, we're always on the lookout for a good place to eat.  We recently ate at a restaurant called Ethos.  So yum!  Usually when we go out to eat we look for the vegetarian section of the menu.  Looking at the Ethos menu my son said, "Wow, how do the meat eaters do it?  Too many choices!"
Check it out next time you take the kiddos to Orlando.

I plan to do a series on grains, seeds and superfoods.  I never seem to get through my series quickly.   Just know that it will intermingle with other info that crosses my path.

Have a great day!

Kale, More Health Food Stores in Europe And A Post By Kimberly Snyder

Have you heard the commotion over kale?  I have been warned to limit the kale I put in my smoothies because of the harmful effects on the thyroid.  I really didn't have any opinion on the topic when I was given the firm admonition but I was definitely intrigued.  I generally try to rotate the greens I put into my smoothies and think that everyone should.  I believe any good thing in excess can be potentially harmful, but I was curious to know if there were any differing opinions.  I have recently seen some interesting opposition. Green Smoothie Girl, Robyn Openshaw has an article worth reading.  Here is one by Dr. Joel Fuhrman.  Celebrity nutritionist Kimberly Snyder also posted a good article.  A good rule of thumb to follow in eating plant foods is to try to include as many colors as the rainbow.  Colorful is always key.  Try the odd vegetable that you aren't used to eating much.  This requires for me to do a little homework.  I picked up some watercress and I didn't really know what to do with it so I got online and looked up some watercress salad recipes.  I have to admit that I haven't had the salad twice but I'm willing to try it again with a different recipe.  After reading the articles in this post, the concern that kale can affect thyroid function is bunk to me.  I will not in any way curtail my consumption of it because it tops the list of the most nutrient dense foods.

More Health Food Stores in Europe

I had intended to give a more thorough list of health food stores in Europe but found the task daunting, especially with the language barrier.  I met a sweet Adventist lady in Italy who graciously agreed to email me some at a later date.  Here are the sources she provided.  Here is one in Torre Pelice, a town located in the Italian Alps.  This is a chain of stores located in France.  Here is another chain based in France with one store that is close in proximity to Geneva, Switzerland.  Thank you so much Danielle!  (I honestly regret not knowing more languages!  I could have had more success with providing a better list if I did!)

A post by Kimberly Snyder

My last post was on colon health.  I read this post by Kimberly Snyder and thought it was very good although the title made me chuckle.  Skin is skin is skin and everyone should try to avoid chemicals in body care products whether a man or a woman.  But the sight of a man with cucumber slices on his eyes was a little funny to me.  Sorry!  What I wanted to point out is that at the bottom of tip #5, one of her recommendations was to have a colon cleanse. An unhealthy colon can affect so many areas of the body, including your skin.  I generally believe that colonics are helpful in reversing cancer, detoxification and other major disorders, but in this article, Kimberly recommends it to improve appearance.  Not a bad idea if you ask me.  Don't forget, you can always use herbs (taken orally) to cleanse the colon.

Spring is just weeks away!

We are digging our way out of the snow here in Maryland.  I get cabin fever easily but found the sunshine to be so uplifting today.  I put on my boots  and went for my daily walk with my dog and completely reveled in it. The birds were singing and I saw my first robin of the season.  It doesn't take much for me to feel like I'm walking on clouds.  Just give me a little sunshine and the beauty of nature and I'm flying!

Have a great day!

Audrey Hepburn and the Importance of Colon Health

My all time favorite actress is none other than the incomparable Audrey Hepburn.  She is one of those timeless individuals that transcends culture, generational style and fad with her inimitable presence.  If truth be told, if I could choose my looks, I would look like Audrey.  I find her to be along the same ranks as Nefertiti and Helen of Troy.  Audrey has drawn countless admirers with her childlike innocence and captivating doe eyes.  She was different from her contemporaries.  Far from voluptuous, her long and lithe figure was more comparable to that of a ballerina, a fact that she bemoaned calling herself,"skinny" and "flat chested".  No matter, men melted at the sight of her.  Several who knew her personally fell helplessly in love with her.  And oh those clothes!  She forged a friendship with legendary couturier Hubert de Givenchy.  What a partnership!  She was the perfect canvas for him to create such lovely style.  Who can forget those yards of fabric, kitten heels, pill box hats or the forever striking little black dress?  To top all this off, she sought to cultivate a loveliness of character and was most beautiful on the inside!  My kids roll their eyes every time I watch a Hepburn film.  I can't help it!  I just love them!  Funny face, Sabrina and My Fair Lady are among my favorites.  Audrey died of colon cancer.  A condition that is so preventable and sadly is all to common here in the United States.  What do you do if you want to prevent it?

Detoxification should begin in the colon

Doing a detox has become a bit of a fad.  I am not minimizing their importance by any means but I believe that before embarking on any detox program, the first area of the body that should be cleansed is the colon.  Americans are number one in having the poorest digestive systems in the world.  This is as a result of eating fiberless food such as meat, white flour and processed, chemical laden food.  Food passes through the colon at a much slower rate than in other healthier cultures.   Having a bowel movement every other day, every two or three days is not uncommon here in the States.  What happens when one switches to whole, fiber rich plant based diet?  Bowel movements become more frequent.  People from healthy cultures who eat a  plant based diet report having bowel movements between two and three times a day.  A far cry from the reality of that exists amongst Americans.

So what do you do?  Eat plant foods in as close to a natural state as possible.  What if you want faster results?  Do a bowel cleanse.  I think people imagine sticking something up, "where the sun don't shine" in order to cleanse their colons but it is much easier than that when you choose to use herbs.  So why is it important to cleanse the colon?  The colon does not exist within a vaccuum.  It touches so many other organs of the body.  Imagine a colon that is sluggish with fecal matter that slowly passes through.  The toxicity in the colon will seep out and affect other areas of the body.  Clean the colon out and suddenly certain ailments will disappear.  After a colon cleanse, people have reported flatter tummies, clearer skin, migraines gone etc.   Once you clean out the colon, then you can focus on any detox program you may want to try. I recommend Danny Vierra's  or Dr. Schulze' intestinal detoxification programs.

To sign off I wanted to share this brief clip on "Audrey Style"
or this more lengthy documentary for any of you Audrey fans out there. I so enjoy anything, "Audrey!"

Have a great day!

NEW YEAR? NEWSTART!

Update I'm getting busier with work and unfortunately my blogging is falling by the wayside.  So sorry.  I'm juggling a little more these days.

I wanted to let you know about an online nutrition summit with some fantastic guests.  The Future of Nutrition Conference will take place January 27 to 31.  It's sure to be good so don't miss it!

New Year?  New Start!

I have never been one to make a new year's resolution.  I don't like them.  For one, they come around far too infrequently for one to decide to make a change to better one's self.  Another reason is because most people who make them, fail.   I believe that everyday should be an opportunity to improve our lives.  Being that it is the popular thing to do, to make a resolution that is, I thought I would share something I never have.  When I started this blog, I told my husband, "I want to start a blog on the eight natural remedies."  So in the subsequent years, I have covered every topic that is included in the "eight natural remedies."  What I haven't done is share them all at the same time in one post.  What are the eight natural remedies?  This phrase is familiar among Adventists.  Adventists are protestant Christians who started the Seventh Day Adventist Church in the 1800s which are known for being the longest lived culture of the United States.  So in essence, these remedies are our prescription for a long and healthy life.

I have mentioned Adventist Hospitals in this blog.  Yes, we have them and they are very necessary but my heart has a soft spot for the lesser known Adventist clinics and wellness facilities that are fewer and further between.   I love these lesser known centers for health and healing because they  instruct people how to improve their health by implementing simple, affordable habits to achieve a disease free life.  These are the names of the wellness centers that I am familiar with:  Weimar Institute, Wildwood, Uchee Pines Institute, Black Hills and Hartland.  There are more that are unofficial run by individuals who are skilled and knowledgeable about healing using natural methods.  Danny Vierra's Bella Vita is one of these locations.  Several of these places have acronyms to help people remember what these 8 natural remedies are.  The one I know the best is the one by Weimar Institute, NEWSTART.

N- Nutrition

What is recommended is a plant based diet, preferably a vegan diet.   I personally would like to add that one can be vegan and still eat terribly wrong.  One should strive to eat as much fresh, organic, unprocessed  food as possible.  Aiming for at least 75% raw would be ideal.  The remaining should be cooked from scratch.  Seek to eat foods with as many varied colors as the rainbow.

E-Exercise

Exercise is so important.  Unfortunately it seems that it is such a drudgery for so many.  Find something you enjoy doing.  Yes, walking absolutely does count.  Seek to have a 30 minute cardio workout three to five days a week.  Strength training helps to maintain healthy bones and also helps to sculpt and shape the physique.  Exercise also helps to keep one younger and mentally sharper with aging.

W-Water

Sodas, coffee, juice and other beverages do not and should not take the place of water.  Our bodies are made of approximately 70% water and we need at least 6 to 8 glasses a day to help lubricate it.  Water helps every function of the body to run more smoothly from helping the liver detoxify to thinning our blood easing the heart's burden of pumping it throughout the body.

S-Sunshine

The sun is not the enemy!  I go a little crazy every time I hear about the harmful effects of the sun.  The truth is, most people are vitamin D deficient which increases one susceptibility to the common cold and to cancer.  Do you want to boost your body's immune system, sleep better, stay younger and feel happier?  Then get out into the sun!

How to expose yourself to the sun:

1. Morning or late afternoon exposure is the best.  If you have midday exposure, you will need much less time to get the vitamin D that you need.  Lighter skin requires less time and darker skin requires more time.  When you skin achieves the lightest shade of pink, you have met your requirement for the day.
2.  Increase your body's resistance to burning by saturating your skin with phytonutrients found in raw food.  Drink fresh juices and green smoothies, eat sprouts and lots of fruits and vegetables.  This is what keeps your skin healthier and creates a resistance to burning.
3. Use safe sunscreens.  I cringe every time I see people slather on sun screens like they are doing themselves a favor.  Most on the market are tainted with cancer causing chemicals that are only increasing their chance of getting cancer!  Find better sunscreens that are devoid of these chemicals.  Look for titanium dioxide or zinc oxide as a key ingredient in better sunscreens.
4. Avoid burning and overexposure
Burning plus a body that isn't well nourished is the recipe that will create skin cancer.  Vitamin D helps to keep a body young but overexposure to the sun can cause photo aging of the skin.  Everything in moderation folks!

T-Temperance

For Adventists this means moderation in all things that are good and complete avoidance on all things that are bad.  The list includes alcohol, tobacco, recreational drugs and caffeine.  I personally would like to add pharmaceutical medications.  Sometimes the latter cannot be avoided such as in emergencies but if a health problem can be overcome by diet and herbs, why tax the body with harmful chemicals?

A-Air

Get fresh air!  There is something about being outside that does something so good for me.  I need to walk or run in the sun everyday even in ice or snow or else I cannot sleep well and am more susceptible to succumbing to a melancholic state of mind.  I love walking in the woods and breathing fresh ionized oxygen.  Gives my psyche such a boost.

R-Rest

I think I need more sleep than most people.  I like to sleep nine hours a night if I can manage it.  I try to be in bed by 9:30 and If I've done everything right to enhance my sleep, I will function well during the day.  I am prone to insomnia and have found that there are somethings I must do so that I can sleep well at night.

Here are my tips:

1.  Spend time in the sun everyday.  I will do my best to get outside regardless of weather.

2.  Try to eat your last meal no later than 5p.m.  A full stomach at bedtime will kill my sleep like nothing else.

3. Sleep in a dark room.  I use black out curtains for a completely dark room.  I cannot tolerate any light at all.

4.  Avoid electronic devices before bedtime.  Any glowing screens will also disrupt my sleep.  I avoid them for at least a couple of hours before bedtime.  I also do not have any alarm clocks, lamps or electrical devices near me while I sleep.

5.  You might think it's hokey but I do ground myself while sleeping.  I believe the science that's been found regarding this new found practice.

6.  This last bit of advice is one I haven't done yet but I plan to eventually.  Use natural bedding.  Conventional mattresses have been created with chemicals that tax the body.  Invest in mattresses that are made with natural materials.

Adventists also observe the Sabbath for 24 hours by refraining from work.  It is a a time for recharging physically, socially and spiritually.

T-Trust

Trust in God.  This is a big one for Adventists.  We take things in stride.  Let go and let God.  Having a supportive community and strong network of friends helps immensely.

If you would like to read more from a woman who had this information way back in the late 1800's, you must read the The Ministry of Healing- E.G.White.  I also really like The Desire of Ages and The Great Controversy by the same author.

Merry Christmas

Mad King Ludwig -purchased at Kathe Wohlfart

My absolute favorite acquisition from my travels this past fall was a hand carved nutcracker I purchased in Rothenburg, Germany. Rothenburg is an ancient walled city like no other I have ever been in. I mean really, where's Cinderella?
Rothenburg, Germany

I love the nutcracker so much I think I'm going to get a second one exactly like it to have the pair.  It looks so perfect on my console.
Funny how certain things and smells  can trigger emotions, memories and warm fuzzies.  The nutcracker in and of itself really isn't anything most people would fawn over, but for me it just makes me think of everything cozy about this very special holiday.  I love the crackling fire in the fireplace, the busyness in the kitchen, decorating and above all the time spent with friends and family.  My hope and prayer is that you will also have a wonderful Christmas.  May you enjoy everything that makes this holiday so special!

Have a wonderful Holiday!

The Healing Benefits of Clay

There's nothing like the holiday season to make my head spin with a thousand things to get done.  Today is another full day and I can't just wait for a lull in the schedule. I have to carve out the time or else I'll never get to another post.  So today I want to discuss the medicinal properties of clay, yet another fantastic product of nature that needs to be showcased.  I choose to keep some on hand and have it stored right next to my container of charcoal.  My clay is European Green Clay I purchased from Hope for Health.   If there is one word I would choose to describe clay, it would be detoxification.  Clay is actually aged volcanic ash.  An area that has high concentration of this substance is located in Benton, Wyoming- hence the name, Bentonite Clay.  Never heard of it?  I'm sure you've seen it.  Many facial masks are made with clay.  Clay is by no means limited to facials and is very beneficial in drawing out toxins from the body.  You may be familar with some of the behavioral practices of parrots of Central and South America.  They eat berries and foods that contain toxicity.  In an effort to protect themselves from sickness, they congregate at clay licks.  These birds have an innate knowledge that clay will neutralize the toxicity they ingest from the foods they eat.

The Many Uses Of Clay

Aside from facials and bird clay licks, clay has many uses and can help in several situations.  Clay can help to absorb toxins, heavy metals, impurities and chemicals.  If you have followed this blog for a while, you may remember me stating that maintaining alkilinity in the body is very important.  The way to do this is to eat at least 75% raw.  An alkaline body is one that successfully fights disease and is on the offense when it comes to airborne pathogens, bacteria and invading "bugs".  (Not to mention that this practice would help to reverse a myriad of medical conditions!)  Wouldn't you know, clay actually helps to alkalize the body, just what you need if you are ever sick.  Clay aids in nutrient absorption, helps to neutralize the body from radiation exposure and is rich in minerals.  As a side note, one of the things that was done to help those exposed from the nuclear fallout at Chernobyl in the Soviet Union,  was to mix clay into chocolate bars for the people to eat.  If that wasn't enough, clay has also been shown to fight MRSA and flesh eating bacteria according to this article.  Talk about packing a serious punch!  So often I find that the the overlooked and in this case a substance that is actually tread underfoot contains powerful healing abilities. Yet again, it is a solution that is ignored because of it's lack in profitability.

Here is more information about clay that might interest you.  Clay helps to cleanse the skin even helping to remove spots left from acne.  It helps the liver in the the process of cleansing the body. It helps to strengthen the immune system and can help in the removal of parasites.  It also has been seen to help with allergies, colitis, viral infections, diabetic neuropathy, diarrhea, stomach ulcers and anemia.  Although clay is seemingly inert, it actually carries a negative electrical charge.  A negative charge coming in contact with the body behaves like an antioxidant help the body to neutralize free radicals and aids in healing the body.

How To Use Clay

When mixing powdered clay with water it is beneficial to not actually mix it.  Because of it's charge, it should be scooped out with a non-metal spoon.  A plastic or wooden spoon should be fine.  I also just pour water onto it slowly until it is aborbed.  I don't even mix it.  Use just enough water to make a paste or poultice to use externally or a few tablespoons of it in a full glass of water to drink as a slurry.  This past summer I used clay on my son's face when he got poison ivy.  Clay will not stain the skin like charcoal can.  (I also use clay for bee stings.)  Another tip to remember is to try not to use natural remedies on a day to day, regular basis. You do not want your body to become accustomed to an herb or treatment rendering it ineffective when you really need it.

Happy Holidays

Okay, I think this time sitting down at the computer has helped me catch my breath from my pre-Christmas whirlwind of activity.  I love this time of year and enjoy getting together with family, baking cookies and making the house sparkle with holiday decor.  Obviously we do not have crown roast for our christmas meal but do it  veggie-Guatemalan style.  My mom takes the lead with our help and makes vegetarian tamales which is an all day group effort.  My husband and kids absolutely love it!  Once a year do we enjoy this very fun, festive activity.  My kids count the days and we all revel in every aspect of this time of year.  Hope you are enjoying this season as well!

Have a great day!

Cultivating An Attitude Of Gratitude

My Thanksgiving with some wonderful friends
There is so much to be sad about these days, just turn on the news.  (My thoughts and prayers go out to the victims in the Phillipines and Illinois.)  The fortunate thing is that most of us are not living through tragedy all the time.  Most of us can be grateful for the good that does come our way.  Instead of lamenting what is lacking in our lives, learning to be thankful for what we have been blessed with can go so far in regards to our health.  It really can make or break the process of healing.  I have heard several interviews of naturopaths in the field of healing cancer naturally and one of the crucial ingredients of success is having a positive mental attitude.  Gratitude, therefore is an attribute we should strive to cultivate.

Here are some articles that I have come across that state this very important truth.  The Huffington Post also has this article worth reading.

Just as a side note.  More than 50% of the world's population lives on  less than a dollar a day.  Here in the United States we do not live hand to mouth.  Even in a down economy I do see abundance on a regular basis.  I believe in taking every moment to savor the blessings.  I love to feel sunlight on my face when I walk my dog.  I love to be with my family and friends and enjoying something as simple as laughter.  Another idea we should always remember is that life is never a snapshot.  Things do change and we never know when we finally have our dreams realized.  Until then, we can always count our blessings!

I hope you and your loved ones had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

The End Of Antibiotics?

I have mentioned my concern for the increasing prevalence of antibiotic resistant superbugs on this blog.  I saw this very important article which include an excellent PBS documentary and had to share it.  Not only are there virulent strains of bugs that have become stronger than the antibiotics we have on the market, but pharmaceutical companies no longer plan to invest in making any new ones.  Not enough profit to make it worth it to them.  The implications are serious to say the least.  It is for this reason I have been emphatic that we become familiar with "antibiotics" we can find in nature.  Two I have mentioned are garlic and oregano (used in conjunction with hydrotherapy. ) Please take the time to read this article and strongly consider self-educating in regards to natural remedies.  I believe it very well may be what we need to fall back on in the future.

Finding Health Food in Europe and a Gluten Free Summit

I loved this bike I saw in Winterswijk, Holland

I have returned home and as I much as I love to travel, I love coming home.  Nothing like the coziness of my own house and bed.  When I left on this trip I wondered what I would encounter food-wise.  I knew that Europeans are more conscious of gmo's and having more healthful ingredients but sourcing food that is both gluten-free and vegan can be a challenge.  To be honest, I did fall off the vegan wagon. (I tend to fall off when I travel.)

I was invited for a meal a few times and when someone offers me hospitality and makes the effort of preparing a meal that is gluten-free, vegetarian but not vegan, I would rather err on the side of kindness and eat what they offer.  Sure my stomach was resentful but I popped a few charcoal pills and all was good.  Here are some grocery stores that carry healthful alternatives in Europe.

Reformhaus is a high quality healthfood store I found to be most prevalent in Europe.  I was able to locate this grocery store in Germany, Switzerland and The Netherlands.  I wanted to take a shot of the interior but a lady scolded me, "nein! nein!"  Fine, I won't take a picture!

Edeka is also a German company which isn't exclusively a health food store but carries a lot of health food selections.

Italy was a bit of a challenge.  My husband and I joined a group of his colleagues for a continuing educational tour on the reformation so with such a tight schedule, we did not have the freedom to search for health food stores.  There was a grocery store walking distance from our Hotel and we had no trouble finding dairy free milk.  As for gluten free, the Italians prepare vegetables very deliciously.  In Italy I ate potatoes, rice and vegetables and all manner of variations using these three types of foods.

In Prague, Czech Republic, we ran into Adventist owned Country Life Restaurant and Health Food Store.

There is no way I can provide a complete list of health food stores but if you are traveling to Europe, you could always search Yelp.

Just a note to let you know that there is a gluten-free summit going on now.  Check out their facebook page to tune in.

Have a great day!

A Success Story, The Latest GMO News and a Teenage Reverses Her Cancer Naturally

Trevi Fountain, Rome, Italy

I'm checking in from Venice with this post.  I received some interesting emails I thought I would pass along.  I really enjoy reading healing testimonials and thought you would too.  Dr. John McDougall is the first nutritionally informed physician I started to follow many moons ago.  Read this story of a woman who conquered her rheumatoid arthritis by changing her diet.  Very inspirational!

I so want such biotech industries like Monsanto to collapse.   As we are touring Europe, we really don't worry about gmo's here.  They are not allowed in Europe.  The U.S. is blatantly in the dark about genetically modified foods. This has created so much mistrust of our government and media for me.  I don't even bother to turn on the news anymore.  It upsets me that someone else is deciding for me what I should be informed about.  I don't like for my opinions to be pushed and swayed by someone who has an agenda.  I'll find my own news, do my own cross comparisons and think for myself. Here is the latest on GMO news.  This bit of news gives me hope.

Lastly, another great cancer reversal story from Chris' blog.  A teenager reverses her cancer with a raw food diet.  So awesome!

Brief post, I know but I'd rather be walking Venice right now.  I'm sure you understand!

Have a great day!

Herbal Products To Use While Traveling

My husband, Nathan and I at Mirabell Gardens, Salzburg, Austria
I'm writing from Berlin, Germany, which is part of a month long European excursion for us.  I so enjoy traveling whether at home in the U.S. or abroad, and I savor every moment I get to do it.  I love appreciating new vistas, flavors and unusual experiences.  It just feels like an adventure to me.  I love getting lost in some town and just exploring it and discovering the hidden paths and alleys.  Some can be really inviting!  The one thing I have found out is that a wonderful traveling experience can be ruined by unexpected sickness.  Blah!  It has happened to me!  No fun at all.

The good news is that we can do certain things to help prevent and treat some of the more common ailments.  You probably remember my love for Dr. Schulze and his products.  Here are some tips and herbal products that I have discovered  can be useful to help deal with the unexpected.

Increase Immunity Before Leaving

First, it is important to boost your immune system before going on a trip. Avoid sugar for the weeks leading  up to a trip.  There is nothing like sugar to compromise your immune system.  If you want to be healthy and well, just skip it.  Increase the amount of raw food you eat prior to your trip. Consider using echinacea and adding oregano, turmeric and garlic to your diet. I recommend also purchasing echinacea extract to take along.  Avoid foods that can trigger a reaction.  I know my joints begin to act up soon after I eat gluten so I try my best to not crumble under temptation!  My husband had to scold me for trying some crusty, scrumptious, freshly baked European bread.  Ahh!  Torture!  But I know that I will be walking a whole lot and I don't want to be in pain so I do my best to endure!

Using Supplements

I like to take Dr. Schulze' Superfood every morning.  I feel better knowing that I am covering my bases nutritionally.  I purchase it in powder form and mix it with water and down it first thing in the morning.  My husband and kids mix it with juice.  On this trip we purchased the Superfood bars that are really convenient for packing along.  No mixing required!

Some Other Effective Herbal Products

There's nothing worse than dealing with food poisoning or other digestive issues when away from home.  But that's where certain products come in to fix the situation.  If there is food poisoning or diarrhea, use charcoal in slurry or tablet form. Use more than you think you need.  Most people make the mistake of taking too little.  Dr. Schulze Intestinal Formula No. 2 is also effective in dealing with diarrhea.  If you are dealing with constipation from trying so many new foods that plug you up, use IntestinalFormula No. 1. Better take Intestinal formula No. 1 with food.  It contains  a lot of garlic and can cause a stomach ache if taken on an empty stomach.  Another fantastic product is Dr. Schulze's Digestive Tonic.  It helps settle nausea or an upset stomach.

Drink Plenty Of Water

It is easier to get dehydrated when traveling.  Be mindful of getting enough water and get in the habit of always carrying a bottle of water.  My husband has a small filtration bottle he carries just in case we cannot find bottled water to purchase.  Doesn't taste as great but it beats the alternative.

Here are some lovely, inviting, vistas and paths I have found during our travels.

We rented a spunky standard shift Citroen.  Here we are in a village in the Bavarian countryside.  So lovely!  Driving on the autobahn was interesting! I didn't feel comfortable driving faster than 90 miles per hour.  Some cars flew past me as if I were standing still!

San Souci, Potsdam, Germany

One thing that I enjoyed was when I thought Ihad seen the most breathtaking view, I would turn the corner and my breath would be taken away...again!
View from our hotel window in Salzburg.  Amazing isn't it?

Gardens by a cathedral in Salzburg

Had to add these guys.  I was meeting them when the Ram head butted the others as if to say, "Hey, I want to meet her too!"  I love it!

My month of travel in Europe isn't over yet.  I hope to post more as long as I can access the internet.

Have a great day!
