Need a Beauty Makeover? Head To Your Produce Aisle!

One Update
If you live in the Washington D. C. region, you may be interested in attending an event hosted by GMO free D.C. "An Evening with Jeffrey Smith."  It will take place on April 16 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.  More information about the event is posted on their Facebook page.

Need a Beauty Makeover?  Head to your Produce Aisle
I'm sure you have seen medications for acne and other skin disorders.  I don't want to name names but you probably have seen them.  Sometimes acne is an attempt by the human body to rid itself of toxicity.  So what do many people do?  They medicate themselves for clear skin, forcing the body to hold onto toxins it clearly does not want.  A better approach is to detoxify the body by eating cleansing foods and avoiding putting toxic substances on the body like conventional body lotions, perfumes and especially acne medications.  Flood the body with live, raw enzymes and antioxidants, eliminate acne inducing foods like dairy, fried and processed foods and the effects can be absolutely amazing!  Natural Society has a list of natural remedies you can look into if you are dealing with acne. If you have followed this blog for a while, you may remember this link which I shared with you in the past.  Check out these before and after pictures of people who have chosen a 100% raw food diet.  I envy people who can do this.  I ate 90 to 95% raw for two years.  I have since changed and now eat 75 to 80% raw.  Initially I felt like a failure when I backed off of nearly 100% raw food, but I have since changed my perspective.  My diet is still very detoxifying and satisfying to me.  I felt like I wasn't quite right on so much raw.  My energy levels increased when I added back in some cooked food.

I want to share another amazing trans-formation of someone who enjoys a detoxifying, plant based diet. I follow celebrity nutritionist Kimberly Snyder.  She recently shared her before and after photos and I was floored.  She is a stunning beauty, but before she improved her diet she struggled with weight and acne.  Take a look at her photos and you'll be amazed as well.  Take the time to read her post.  Kimberly is vegan and eats a lot of raw, detoxifying foods, but she isn't 100% raw.  For those of you who might be beating yourselves up trying to go 100% raw, you don't have to!  Kimberly also has a fantastic new book Beauty Detox Foods that is already a New York Times bestseller!

How To Slow The Aging of Your Skin and Possibly Reverse It

It never ceases to amaze me when I see women purchasing products to improve their skin tone but continuing the same lifestyle practices that injure their skin to begin with.  According to Markus Rothkranz, any effort to manipulate and treat the body (skin) for improvement without considering diet and lifestyle is as futile as "painting over rust." This makes perfect sense to me.  I believe the better approach is to make your organs, tissues and blood healthy and beautiful on the inside.  Once your body has been able to detoxify and cleanse itself with the foods you eat, your skin will soon reflect the changes.  Here are some tips I've been able to gather.

Stop these things:   You are not doing yourself any favors if you drink alcohol, smoke, drink coffee or sodas.  Drink water, juiced fruits and vegetables and non-caffeinated herbal tea (except green tea).  Excessive sun exposure is also a problem.  You need to expose yourself moderately to the sun for good health but  excessive exposure can lead to photo-aging of the skin. Fried foods, processed foods, and sugar wreak havoc  on the skin and your health.  (Please don't consider nutrasweet, diet sodas, or aspartame as a healthy option. Instead choose to use sparingly coconut palm sugar, date sugar, raw honey or stevia.)  I personally choose not to eat animal products, dairy in particular.  Animal products are difficult to digest and sap your body of energy that could be used for other things.  Eating animal products also ages you faster than eating a plant based diet.  Dairy products can do a number on wrecking the clarity of your skin.   If, however, you decide to continue eating meat, please consider buying it at a local farm where the animals are raised humanely, roam free and have a more nutritious diet without antibiotics or hormones.

Eat an Alkaline Diet:  My brother-in-law is a physician who has done studies in longevity and hyperbaric medicine.  In a conversation with me he said that if you know how to prevent cancer, then you know how to slow the progress of aging.  The enemy of youthfulness is free radical damage.  The way to combat free radicals is to overwhelm the body with antioxidants.  This means that you should eat an alkaline diet which would comprise at least 75% raw vegetables, fruit, soaked nuts, seeds, sprouts, sea vegetables, etc.  Include lots of dark leafy greens.  Green smoothies are the easiest way to consume these.  Also consider adding juicing to your regimen.  Juicing is phenomenal for the skin.  Include healthful grains like quinoa, amaranth, buckwheat and millet.  These foods contain the mineral silica which helps promote the elasticity of the cell membrane and thereby the elasticity of your skin.  Include foods such as figs, cucumber, coconut oil, hemp seeds, aloe vera, pumpkin seeds, macadamia nuts and turmeric.  According to David Wolfe, these foods are high in antioxidants and contain several minerals (silicon, sulfur and zinc) that promote the elasticity of your skin.

Use Sea Buckthorn:  Sea Buckthorn is a bright orange berry that grows in the Himalayas.  The local people who consume this berry regularly or drink its juice have very youthful skin.  You can find Sea Buckthorn lotions and juice at health food stores.  Tonya Zavasta - Beautiful on Raw, Nadine Artemis - Living Libations and Longevity Warehouse all have lotions that include this berry.  Avoid body care products that are not clean!  See this recent post for better alternatives.

David Wolfe's Eating For Beauty
Dry brush your skin daily: I first heard of dry skin brushing when I read Dr Richard Schulze's book, There Are No Incurable Diseases.   Dr. Schulze includes this practice in his Incurables Program.  Dry brushing is very important for the skin.  It helps to exfoliate the outer layer of dead skin cells.  It stimulates blood circulation and cell turnover and it stimulates  lymphatic drainage.  In other words, dry skin brushing helps to detoxify your skin and ultimately, your body.  Be sure to brush towards the heart.  Get a brush with some sort of natural bristle.  These are available at most health food stores.  Tonya Zavasta sells a facial brush on her site.

Consider these supplements: I would consider these supplements for healthy skin. I suggest including some sort of superfood. I have a preference for Dr. Schulze's Superfood, but I think Sunwarrior's Ormus Supergreens is good too.  Probiotics are very important for skin health as crazy as it may sound.  Having healthful intestinal flora can help control the harmful bacteria in your body preventing acne.  I keep things simple and just eat sauerkraut to meet this need.  Enzymes are very good to have as well.  We are born with a limited supply of enzymes and require them for our digestive process as well as other metabolic functions.  Eating a high quantity of raw foods helps to replenish your stores, but you could also take a supplement in addition to your raw foods.  Raw enzymes by Garden of Life seems like a good product.  Lastly,  consider taking Silica.  This is the mineral that Truth Calkins and David Wolfe recommend.

Heal Your Face by Markus Rothkranz

An amazing new product:   First I need to divulge some information about myself. I'm not very excited about telling you this, but it just let's you know how excellent this product is.  After having children, the skin on my abdomen wasn't as... well, smooth as it was before kids.  The conventional approach would be to have plastic surgery, collagen injections or what have you.  I searched high and low for a natural alternative but to no avail... until just recently.  I am using a botanically based product that is tightening my skin and restoring it to its pre-pregrancy smoothness.  It's absolutely amazing.  I'm still testing it on myself so it'll be a couple of weeks before I do a post on it.

Recommended Reading:  Consider reading David Wolfe's Eating for Beauty and Markus Rothkranz's Heal Your Face.  Having good skin is something very personal and affects us at a deep emotional level.  What most people don't know is that you do have control over the health of your skin and how fast it ages.  It's most definitely not a matter of chance but a matter of choice!

Super Models on Super Foods

Miranda Kerr

I saved a clip and an article that I thought were very inspiring.  Check out these two ladies who have taken the time to care for themselves with good nutrition.  Carol Alt was in her modeling heyday in the 80's.  She is now in her fifties and looks amazing!  I do have to say however, there is no way I could ever eat raw meat like she does. Yuck! (Just my personal preference)  Miranda Kerr is another model who embraces whole nutritious food.  She's got a great list of superfoods we could all incorporate into our diets.

I've been busy lately, sorry for slowing down with my posts.  Will try to keep up!  Hope you all have a great weekend!

Growing Younger

I know I have done a post on the fountain of youth; I never tire of it, however.  I just received a newsletter from Green Smoothie Girl featuring a clip on 70-year-old Annette Larkins.  Wow!  She is unbelievable!  In the photo to the right, she is in her sixties, check out this clip which is more recent.  In the same newsletter there is also mention of 65-year-old Donna Gates, who has a program helping people transition to a raw, plant based diet.  The effects of raw food over a long period of time yield phenomenal results.  Check them out yourself!

The Raw Food Diet and the Fountain of Youth

I recognize that not everyone wants to be a raw foodie. That's fine, you don't have to be. If I weren't a raw foodist, I would strive to have at least 60% raw food in my diet, preferably alkaline-producing raw foods. Alkilinity is achieved when you consume lots of leafy greens, sprouts, and vegetables as opposed to lots of fruit which is neutral – cooked food and animal products lead to acidity in the body. (More on pH balance in a future post.) For the next 35% of my diet I would choose cooked vegan food. The last 5% would be comprised of anything I want. This would be my opportunity to cheat. However, if you try this don't be surprised if over time you lose a taste for the foods you have always loved. That is a good thing! It generally takes about 10 days for your taste buds to begin to adjust. That is not a hard and fast rule, just an observation made by my husband when he was working at NEWSTART® lifestyle program at the Weimar Center of Health and Education.

That said, I would like to show you the amazing rejuvenative results of a raw food diet. It is absolutely phenomenal for staying young and the closest thing we have to the fountain of youth. I personally am very happy with my experience with it! Losing wrinkles on a raw food diet? Yes, I really have!

Some in Hollywood have jumped onto the raw food band wagon. They recognize that having a healthful diet is crucial for looking good, even into the later years. Some actors, models or otherwise famous people have turned to raw food to stay young and, of course, to be healthy. Angela Bassett, Demi Moore, Carol Alt, and Woody Harrelson are a few examples. Demi Moore (right) is 48 years old. Okay, I'm ready for the plastic surgery accusation. There is no way I can prove that she hasn't been under the scalpel. All I can say is that I don't think a face lift makes you look younger, it just makes you look stretched.  Demi, on the other hand, looks fresh, young, and natural.

You don't buy it? How about Tonya Zavasta (left). She is a raw food evangelist and expert on aging beautifully. Her website has a fantastic array of beauty products and regimens. She has a blog and lots of raw food recipes. Care to guess her age? 53 years old! Not a single wrinkle on her face.

Suppose I were to really push the limits. I want to look good in my 60's perhaps, maybe even into my 70's. Do you think it's possible? Beautiful Annette Larkins (below) is in her sixties. She also has raw food recipes available through her website.

Last, but not least, is a phenomenal lady. Her name is Mimi Kirk. Take a look at this YouTube clip and see for yourself. Get this - as of 2009 she was dating someone 15 years younger than herself. Way to go Mimi!  Check out her website.  She has tons of recipes to share plus a recipe book.
Again, for the You Tube clip, it may be necessary to right click on the link and open in a new tab or window.

I know I promised those transition programs, I just get ahead of myself with this info. I promise, it's coming!
